US Civil Rights Trail — AR Web App
I was the lead developer, handling the majority of the programming, image training, framework modifications, and testing.
WebGL, A-Frame, AR.js
Augmented Reality
The official US Civil Rights Trail book includes a companion web app, which presents additional content through an augmented reality lens. The companion app recognizes and tracks three of the full-page spreads included in the book, bringing up 3D scenes and video content tailored to each page. I had the pleasure of handling the technical aspects of this AR experience.
Markerless
There was one major catch when this project kicked off - the physical book was already going to print. This meant the AR experience had to work off of existing pages, with no additional markers to assist with tracking and activation. As an added challenge, we also needed an affordable web-based solution to keep the barrier to entry low. With a bit of research and light modification, we ultimately settled on the open source AR.js library.
Remote Benefits
Working remotely during this project offered some unexpected benefits. Throughout the development process, the web app received incidental testing across a wide variety lighting conditions and devices, as collaborators had to review content in their own homes. This helped catch issues with glare, page curl affecting tracking, and first-time user experience. The resulting product benefited from these findings, and helped inform future AR activations.
